Project Overview

The Village of Pemberton, Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Electoral Area C, and Líl’wat Nation face risks from 38 hazards identified in a joint 2013 Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment. These hazards include human-caused, technological, and natural events.

Among these, flooding, landslides, wildfires, railway accidents, and gas leaks were identified as the highest risks, with the potential to require large-scale community evacuations.

To help communities prepare for these situations, the VOP and the SLRD are working together to further asses evacuation planning in the area. Building on previous traffic modelling work, the project will examine evacuation routes, shared resources, infrastructure connections, and opportunities to strengthen regional preparedness.

The VOP, in partnership with the SLRD, has engaged Calian Nuclear to develop a comprehensive Evacuation Route Plan. The plan will identify and assess viable evacuation routes, estimate evacuation timelines, and support coordinated emergency response across the valley.

Community input is an important part of this work. Residents are invited to share their perspectives and experience to help inform the plan through the public survey linked below.

Why This Project Matters

In an emergency, safe and efficient evacuation routes are critical to protecting residents and supporting emergency response. Understanding how people may leave the area, how long it may take, and how infrastructure and resources are connected helps local governments plan and respond more effectively.

This project aims to identify potential challenges, improve coordination between neighbouring communities, and strengthen regional preparedness for emergencies that could require evacuation.

How to Participate

Residents are invited to complete a short survey to share their travel patterns, local knowledge, and perspectives on evacuation routes in the area.
