Project Overview
The Village of Pemberton is preparing an application to the BC Air Access Program (BCAAP) for a small safety-related project at the Pemberton Regional Airport (CYPS). The proposed work involves removing trees located on Crown land to the east of the runway that have grown into the aircraft flight path.
While not a concern when the runway was originally established, tree growth over time has raised safety concerns that have been brought forward by airport users.
What is Being Proposed
This project would involve:
- Removal of select trees east of the runway that currently project into the aircraft approach path.
- Completion of the required environmental and regulatory reviews prior to work proceeding.
Note: The selected trees are located within a riparian area. However, due to the work categorized as necessary for institutional use (airport operations), the project is exempt from the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation under Section 3(1)(c). A provincial licence to cut the trees may still be required.
Project Costs & Funding
The estimated total project cost is $20,146. If the application is successful, the Village would be responsible for 25 per cent of the cost ($5,036.50), with the remainder funded through BCAAP.
Community Engagement
As part of the grant application, the Village is required to engage with the community. While this is a technical project with limited direct impact on most residents, we are seeking public input to meet the grant requirement.
Survey will be open until Monday, January 12, 2026
